Fourth Quarter Blues

Welcome to the fourth quarter. (Started October- I'm a little behind.) Unfortunately, this is the hardest time of year to get a job. Unless there is a dire need, companies will wait until after the new year to hire. Generally, they don't want to make decisions this time of year. There is always seasonal holiday work but these opportunities become more scarce with each passing day. These positions are mostly entry level with so-so pay. On the plus side, they can lead to a permanent job for some. So...

Keep applying anyway. It is had to know who has a dire need. Stay focused and keep moving forward. Just don't get too discouraged if nothing much happens. It's normal for this time of year. If you have a high demand skill, the fourth quarter blues have less effect. Recently, I had a customer (highly experienced paramedic) I helped  post a resume on ziprecruiter.com. He got a call the next day and a job offer the the day after that. They had the pressing need (safety officer / onsite first responder) and he had the skill. This is seasonal work but he has a good chance of going full time. It was one of the fastest job offers I've ever seen! We will see what happens.

Learn new skills, keep plugging away and enjoy this time of year as best you can.

PASSWORDS, PASSWORDS, PASSWORDS

To get the most out of your job search, get organized. Looking for work will require creating accounts on many different websites, each with a username and password. Make a system that you can use to keep up with what is what. Dong on line applications is difficult enough already without having to do the reset password merry-go-round. Also, know how to get into your email on a regular desktop computer. I've seen people who just use their smart phone for email and forgot long ago their password. Smart phones get lost, break and are useless when you cannot pay the bill. Don't be dependent on your smart phone. Doing hour or two hour long applications on one is going to get old really fast. Don't have  computer? Somewhere in your town there is a library, a career center or internet cafe that has one to use for free. The first thing you will need is an email address you can get into. If you are using a free computer somewhere, get a flash drive just for your job search. Th...
