One thing I come across at work all too often is full voice mails, voice mails not set up or no voice mail at all. This is no way to find a job! Yes, you as a job seeker, are constantly bombarded by unsolicited calls for schools, trainings and tons of other things you have no interest or need for. Still, you cannot cut this most important communication tool. I don't care who you are or how great a resume you may have, if an employer cannot reach you, that's it. They will move on to another qualified person they can reach. Keep up your voice mail. It is important.
While we are here. Avoid the following:
1) Music rings. We all know people NEVER stereotype? Right?? The song you pick may sound great to you but how about an older hiring manager? It could either be great or an instant turn off. Maybe they don't care but why take the risk? Keep it professional.
2) Cutesy voice greetings. I know you have a great kid but is he or she the best first impression for the HR lady calling you about that Executive Administrative Assistant position you applied for last week? Job searching is not the time to put kids on your voice mail greeting. You want to be professional.
3) Sour mood. I know looking for work is terrible but try to sound happy when answering the phone. Try to sound upbeat and positive. Answering like you know it s a bill collector calling is one way to get off on the wrong foot You may or may not be able to recover. I Like "Hello, this is Paul." This way, the caller can pretty sure they got the right person right away. Calling people you don't know is no fun, even bringing good news. You don't know what you are going to get. Do your part to make speaking with you a pleasant experience. Again, sound professional.
I think these tips are good all along the job search spectrum from construction laborer to network engineer. People are people. It is just better to sound pleasant and professional.
