Antidote

Last time we talked about Applications, Depression and Uncertainty. What to do? It is not all doom and gloom.

Well, there is no getting around applications on or off line. The best thing to do is allow plenty of time for each one. Often, you can save what you got and come back to it. If this is an option use it. Take a break from time to time. Rushing through will not pay off in the end. Also, make a plain resume for the ATS readers. If you can, look closely at the job description and get your resume to match it as close as possible.

As for unemployment related depression, stay active and engaged. Making a daily schedule may be helpful. Make time for the job search, exercise, and fun stuff (family and friends). You have time, the most valuable thing of all. I would recommend joining a job search club or something similar. Getting around people can be good for your mental well-being as well as finding work.

Keeping a schedule can help reduce the feeling of uncertainty. That way you have an idea of what each day is going to bring. And take it one day at a time. Worry solves nothing. Volunteer some. It is a good reason to get out of the bed in the morning. You have something to do. You are useful. You are gaining experience. Enjoy all the small things people rushing around miss like the beautiful sunshine coming through the window on a cloudless morning. And remember all storms pass. This will too.

One last thing. Ignore all those "I can get a job tomorrow" people. It is not about them.

PASSWORDS, PASSWORDS, PASSWORDS

To get the most out of your job search, get organized. Looking for work will require creating accounts on many different websites, each with a username and password. Make a system that you can use to keep up with what is what. Dong on line applications is difficult enough already without having to do the reset password merry-go-round. Also, know how to get into your email on a regular desktop computer. I've seen people who just use their smart phone for email and forgot long ago their password. Smart phones get lost, break and are useless when you cannot pay the bill. Don't be dependent on your smart phone. Doing hour or two hour long applications on one is going to get old really fast. Don't have  computer? Somewhere in your town there is a library, a career center or internet cafe that has one to use for free. The first thing you will need is an email address you can get into. If you are using a free computer somewhere, get a flash drive just for your job search. Th...
